But despite his incredible on-field efficiency, one SEC coach has decided to issue a rather scathing criticism of the Alabama star.In an interview with 247Sports, an anonymous SEC coach identified some issues with Tagovailoa. Among the criticisms were his need to “humble himself” as well as unspecified “bad things” he did during the national title game against Clemson.“I think Tua needs to humble himself,” the anonymous coach said. “I think he did some bad things in the bowl game that cost the team because he put himself ahead of the team. He needs to understand Alabama won national championships by playing great defense and special teams and not beating itself. In the national championship game, the quarterback play was atrocious, and some would say the play-calling, too.”While it’s hard to argue against Tagovailoa’s stat line in that game, it is worth mentioning that his poor performance came against a Clemson team that was statistically the best defense in the nation.Tagovailoa finished the game with 295 passing yards, a 64.7-percent completion rate, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Both touchdowns came in the first quarter though. Alabama was shut out for the final 44 minutes of the game. While Tagovailoa did not have his best game as a player in the national title game, it seems like a stretch to say that he is one of the biggest problems that the Crimson Tide has.The anonymous coach also pointed out that the staff changes the team made throughout the off-season are likely to have a negative impact on their regular season.last_img
