Coming off a massive weekend with funked-out dance sets at both Bonnaroo and Mysteryland, live electronic, funked-out brotherly duo The Floozies have released their latest single, the aptly titled “Summer Fling.” The group had this to say about the new track, “All things in love and life are fleeting. The fact that everything comes to an end just makes it all that much more beautiful. We have no choice but to smile while the things we love are still with us. So that’s kind of what summer fling is about. Instead of dreading the end, appreciate the present and rejoice that you ever got to have something so beautiful and lovely and fun and in the first place.”Purple Hatter’s Ball Unveils Full Lineup, Thursday Pre-Party, And Activities ScheduleThe Floozies have a heavy-hitting schedule this summer and will be appearing at this weekend’s Purple Hatter’s Ball, and move on to Electric Forest, High Sierra, North Coast Music Festival, among others. And to top it all off, they will headline Red Rocks Amphitheatre for the first time ever, and will make an appearance at Dominican Holidaze in December.Listen to “Summer Fling” via Soundcloud, below.

When Phife Dawg passed away earlier this year, fans assumed that would signal the end of A Tribe Called Quest. Fortunately, we’ll have one last chance to listen to the full band play together, as L.A. Reid – CEO of Epic Records – divulged in an interview that a new ATCQ album is on the way, and it features all of the members.According to Reid, the album was recorded prior to Phife’s death, and includes every member of the collective, including Jarobi White. “Man, it’s really something special,” said Reid. “It’s one of the things that I’m most excited about of everything we’re working on.” The full interview can be heard on the Rap Radar podcast, with the discussion about the album coming roughly around the 14:45 mark. In the discussion, Reid says that the album is “coming soon,” only getting us even more excited about this new Quest release. The last new album from the group came in 1998, when they released The Love Movement. We’ll be sure to keep you posted as to any news regarding a new A Tribe Called Quest album.[H/t Pitchfork]

Today, we get our first taste of the new album, as James has shared the leading single!Titled “Same Old Lie,” the track sees James stirring the pot in a musical call to action. James said of the album, “I’m just trying to be a part of the discussion and encourage people to speak out for equality, to not be afraid to speak out for peace and love. All of us feel afraid at times in these absolutely insane times, but it’s important we speak our minds, cast our votes, and do not give in to fear and hatred.”Check out the new song, with the lyrics and full schedule posted below.“Same Old Lie” LyricsIT’S THE SAME OLD LIE THEY TELL YOUWHEN YOU’RE LITTLE-TRY TO MAKE YOU FORGET JUST WHAT IT ISYOU’RE REALLY MADE OF.AND FOLLOW ON JUST LIKE MOST EVERYONE…BUT YOU AND ME WE AIN’T LIKE MOST EVERYONE.PURE INDIVIDUAL BRIGHT AS THE SHINING SUN.AND SURE AS HELL WE KNOW- WHERE IT IS WE COME FROM.AND WHERE IT IS YEAH WE PROBABLY GOING BACK TO-BUT NOW WE GONNA LIVE A LITTLE-TRY AND GET A LITTLE TRUTH.IT’S THE SAME IT’S THE SAME IT’S THE SAME OLD LIE.IT’S THE SAME OLD LIE YOU BEEN READING ABOUTBLEEDING OUT-NOW WHO’S GETTING CHEATED OUT?YOU BEST BELIEVE IT’S THE SILENT MAJORITY-AND IF YOU DON’T VOTE IT’S ON YOU- NOT ME.IT’S THE SAME OLD LIE TOLD FROM THE DAWN OF TIME.STRETCH IT OUT A LITTLE TRY TO MILK EVERY LAST DIME.HATE CRIMES. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest decoration a civilian can receive from the Federal government. The award honors people who have made “especially merits contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” The recognition often goes to members of the art and entertainment community: musicians like Bob Dylan, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, B.B. King, Frank Sinatra, and Stevie Wonder rank among pass recipients of the honor.Today, President Barack Obama honored 21 new recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House, including a selection of actors (Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Robert Redford), a pair of NBA legends (Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) NBC executive/Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, Bill and Melinda Gates. In addition Obama added two more musicians to the award’s list of honorees: Motown giant Diana Ross and the Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen. While Obama had words of adoration for all of the medal recipients, he spoke at the greatest length–and with notable reverence–about Springsteen, a personal friend and longtime supporter. You can read Obama’s full speech about Bruce, and watch full video of the reception below:“He was sprung from a cage out on Highway 9, a quiet kid from Jersey just trying to make sense of temples of dreams and the mystery that dotted his home town, pool halls, bars, girls, cars, alters, and assembly lines. For decades, Bruce Springsteen has brought us all along on a journey consumed with the bargains between ambition and injustice, pleasure and pain, the simple glories and scattered heartbreak of everyday life in America. To create one of his biggest hit, he once said, ‘I wanted to craft a record that sounded like the last record on Earth, the last one you ever needed to hear, one glorious noise, then the apocalypse. Every restless kid in America was given a story, ‘Born to Run’.He didn’t stop there. Once he told us about himself, he told us about everyone else: the steelworker in ‘Youngstown’; the Vietnam vet in ‘Born in the USA’; the sick and marginalized on ‘Streets of Philadelphia’; the firefighter carrying the weight of a reeling but resilient nation on ‘The Rising’; the young solider reckoning with the ‘Devils and Dust’ in Iraq; the communities knocked down by recklessness and greed on ‘Wrecking Ball’; all of us with our faults and failings, every color, class, and creed, bound together by one defiant restless train rolling toward ‘The Land of Hope and Dreams’. These are all anthems of our America, the reality of who we are and the reverie of who we want to be.The hallmark of a rock and roll band, Bruce Springsteen once said, is that the narrative you tell together is bigger than the one you could tell on your own. For decades, alongside The Big Man, Little Steven, a Jersey girl named Patti, and all the men and women of the E Street Band, Bruce Springsteen has been carrying the rest of us on his journey, asking us all what is the work for us to do in our short time here.I am the President, he is The Boss. Pushing 70, he’s still laying down four-hour live sets … fire-breathing rock and roll. I thought twice about giving him a medal named for freedom, because we hope he remains, in his word, a prisoner of rock and roll, for years to come.”Finally, before the crowd dispersed, many of the honorees took their turn at completing the “Mannequin Challenge”–maybe the most star-studded attempt yet! Congratulations to Bruce, Diana, and the rest of this year’s recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

In a new interview with Atlanta Business Chronicle, drummer Butch Trucks was asked about the potential for an Allman Brothers reunion. Fans have heard from Gregg Allman himself about the issue, as well as from Derek Trucks and Oteil Burbridge over the last year or so. While Gregg and Oteil have remained optimistic, Derek recently said that he was too satisfied with the direction of Tedeschi Trucks Band to rekindle those old flames. With fans still wanting more Allman Brothers Band shows, naturally the first question asked of founding drummer Butch Trucks was about the reunion. He said, “It’s possible but unlikely. To be quite honest, it gets down to whether or not Gregg is healthy enough to do it. There are some other complications but we can get the other things ironed out if Gregg is healthy enough to do it. If he’s not healthy enough to do it, we just can’t do it.”He continued, “He’s been going in and out lately. He’ll get sick then healthy. I know he just rescheduled his tour so that gives me an optimistic feeling but we’ll see what happens.”Later on in the interview, Trucks was asked about his own band, The Freight Train, and their upcoming performance in the region. Trucks talks about wanting to continue the legacy of the Allman Brothers by playing their music, in contrast to all of the other ABB musicians on the road these days.“One of the reasons I put this band together is because The Allman Brothers split up in 2014 and it wasn’t because of a lack of attendance. People were still packing the Beacon (Theatre) every time we played. The one thing I noticed was so much of the audience was in high school or college. They were just catching on to what The Allman Brothers were doing, then we split up.Derek (Trucks) and Susan (Tedeschi, Derek’s wife) are doing what they’re doing (Tedeschi Trucks Band) and Gregg is doing what he’s always wanted to do, and I’m glad he’s getting a chance to do that. Warren (Haynes) is out doing what he’s always done, which is pretty much everything. (Laughs) But, nobody is continuing what The Allman Brothers did and that’s the music I love to play.”Let’s hope these musicians can come together for one more run at the Allman Brothers, because that’s something we’d love to see. You can read Trucks’ full interview here.
